Situated at Metro Davidson County’s utmost westernmost point, the Bellevue neighborhood is just 12 miles west of Downtown Nashville along Interstate 40. Its borders form in this order: Williamson County to the South, Dickson County on its Western side, and Cheatham to its North. Despite nominally belonging to Metro Nashville, Bellevue has preserved an air of small-town charm with numerous locally-owned businesses coexisting harmoniously alongside big-box national stores.
Louis DeMoss, the town’s founder, held onto a plantation home known as ‘Belle Vue’; this residence bestowed Bellevue with its name. In 1795—the foundational year for Bellevue John Davis, an esteemed surveyor, and Abraham DeMoss a brave veteran of the Revolutionary War constructed their respective houses along the banks of Harpeth River near Nashville’s southwest region.Â
The location of Davis’ abode was what we now recognize as Highway 100 (specifically referred to today as Ensworth School site); similarly situated nearby are historical antiques from DeMoss’ life at Belle Vue an estate tracing its roots back along Old Harding Pike near railroad tracks. Throughout the years, settlers and their businesses have sprouted various communities, notably the intersection of Old Harding and Bellevue.
During the 1860s, a commuter train facilitated transportation to Bellevue through the Nashville-to-Waverly line; it supplemented Highway 100 and Harding Road(currently known as Old Harding Pike). By 1927, they completed construction on the Memphis-Bristol Highway, now U.S. 70 South, leading businesses, including numerous gambling establishments and bootlegging clubs, to open along this newly constructed road. The establishment of electricity in Bellevue occurred in 1936.
The Belle Meade Community, in its evolutionary process, centered its construction and economy on agriculture; furthermore, some local businesses catered to the nearby, providing necessary goods and services.
